Tyczynski MSEd ’13 Named Rookie Teacher of the Year

Kathryn_Tyczynski_RThe South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) honored Kathryn F. Tyczynski

MSEd ’13 as Rookie Teacher of the Year. She will be recognized at the CEC’s conference in Myrtle Beach in April.

Tyczynski is a special education teacher who works mostly with autistic children at Muller Road Middle School, Richland School District 2.  At Canisius, she served as a research clinician for the Institute for Autism Research, an experience Tyczynski says helped her obtain her current teaching position.

PHETE Students Place Second and Third in Video Contest

Get Moving NYAs a requirement in Dr. Lauren Cavanaugh’s PED 311/511 – Elementary and Movement Activities course, students in the Physical and Health Education Teacher Education (PHETE) program are asked to submit a video to the Western Zone New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYSAHPERD) Get Moving NY Contest. PHETE majors placed 2nd and 3rd in this State-wide competition and this is the second consecutive year that PHETE majors from Canisius College have received top honors. Contestants prepare a five-minute video, which presents various ways to lead or encourage a physically active lifestyle.

This year’s 2nd and 3rd place winners are: Eric Gold, Cassidy Ryan, J.P. Stevenson, Adam Wolfley (2nd place), Logan Aikins, Travis Denman, Matt Francisco, Chris Juergens and John Occhiuto (3rd place). Winners were awarded $250 and $100 worth of Flaghouse equipment to donate to a school physical education program of their choice.
