Faculty and Staff Donor Profile

AbbatoyLinkedinPhoto-2In recognition of this year’s faculty and staff giving campaign, the Canisius Fund will be highlighting faculty and staff supporters throughout the next two months. Gifts made in support of the 2015-16 Faculty and Staff Campaign provide essential funding for tuition assistance, academic and athletic excellence, and programs that strengthen our Jesuit educational mission.

Thank you to the 137 faculty and staff members who have generously participated in this year’s campaign. If you have not yet made a gift to the Canisius Fund and would like to join your colleagues in doing so, visit canisius.edu/faculty-staff.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of Canisius College. You truly are the spark that inspires our students to “go forth and set the world on fire.”

Eileen Abbatoy, associate director, Griff Center for Academic Engagement
As the associate director of the Griff Center, Eileen Abbatoy witnesses first-hand how a Canisius education is a transformative experience. She sees students find success academically, gain confidence while pursuing internship or employment opportunities, and receive news that they’ve been accepted into the professional school of their choice.

Because of her belief in our students and the mission of Canisius, Abbatoy made the decision to show her support for the college above and beyond what she does each day in the Griff Center through her participation in the Faculty & Staff Campaign.  Abbatoy made her first gift to the college in 2008 and has been a committed supporter ever since.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?
As a member of the Griff Center staff, I enjoy being able to make a difference in our students’ lives.  In my current role, I assist students in discovering their passion, ultimately helping them to select a major and begin effective career preparation.

What motivated you to make your first gift?
I was motivated to make my first gift to the college after reading stories of how philanthropy makes a tangible difference in the lives of our students. Contributing via payroll deduction is convenient, making it easy for me to spread my support out over the course of a year, as opposed to making one lump sum payment.

Since 2008, you have made a gift in support of Canisius and its students. Why?
Deciding to make a gift was easy! Every day I meet amazing students who are doing great things both in and out of the classroom.  They have the opportunity to work with faculty and staff who are committed to their success and who go the extra mile to engage them and serve the community.

Why is supporting students through the Canisius Fund important to you?
It’s a way for me to support the endeavors of so many of our students and to show my commitment and belief in Canisius!

What is your favorite campus event to attend each year?
That’s easy, the Mass of the Holy Spirit!  I love to watch the procession of faculty and staff in their regalia, student organizations and the Jesuits followed by a beautiful mass to kick-off the semester.  It underlines our ability as a Jesuit institution to incorporate the spiritual in all aspects of our daily work.

Fun Fact: What is something the Canisius community would be surprised to know about you?
I am a Marx Brothers aficionado!
