Canisius to Host Swimming and Diving Championships

Graesser2Four of the most exciting nights of the year occur this week when Canisius hosts the men’s and women’s MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo. This event, in front of large and passionate crowds, is worth the price of admission as your Golden Griffins match their best efforts against the rest of the conference.

The meet starts Wednesday February 10 at 6:00 p.m. and continues through Saturday, February 13. Preliminary events are contested from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while the championship races start each evening at 6:00 p.m.

So, if you are looking for some intense action in what might be the warmest place in Buffalo this weekend, head on down to “The Flick” and root for the Griffs.

Tax Forms for 2015

Faculty and staff who are covered under one of the college’s health insurance plans will receive two new tax documents this year- the 1095-B and 1095-C.

The 1095-B was issued by Independent Health and has already gone out to participants. It provides information regarding your health insurance carrier and who was covered under the plan during the year and what months that person was covered.

The 1095-C will be issued by the college. It provides information regarding the college’s plans and meeting the Affordable Care Act of minimum essential value. This form has not been issued yet. The college will be sending these forms before or by the deadline of March 31, 2016.

With respect to filing your taxes, if you are covered under an employer-based plan, then you do not need these forms to file your taxes electronically. Employees may file their 2015 taxes and will not need to complete an amended return. When you receive the additional form from the college, you will want to place it with your personal tax records.

RAISE Benefit Coming Soon!

India-2010-kids-with-TessaCampus Ministry is hosting its annual RAISE Benefit in early March. More than 50 Canisius students will take part in one of the college’s 2016 International Service-Immersion Experiences this summer, journeying to locations around the globe to live out the Jesuit ideals of men and women with and for others. This year’s international service-immersion trips include experiences in Jamaica, El Salvador, Poland and India where Canisius students will work with people who have suffered from war, hunger, neglect, discrimination and poverty.

Students are excited to embark on this transformative experience but they need your help! Student participants are expected to raise funds to cover the cost of their experiences. You can help them meet their goals by:

  • Adopting a Student! This year, faculty and staff have the opportunity to support a specific student, team or service-immersion experience through our Adopt-a-Student program (gifts in support of this program count toward the 2015-16 Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign) and those who make donations of $50 or more will receive a free ticket to our RAISE Benefit dinner. To make a gift and learn more about the students who will directly benefit from your generosity, go here.
  • Submitting a basket or raffle item for our RAISE Benefit by Tuesday, March 1.
  • Purchasing your ticket in advance for our RAISE Benefit dinner scheduled for Thursday, March 10 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The night will be complete with food tastings from around the world, a live band and a cash bar. Basket and raffle winners will be chosen. Tickets will be on sale for $20 in the Campus Ministry main office later this month.

We appreciate the support of our Canisius family! Below is a testament from Karl Kozlowski, PhD, associate professor of kinesiology, on why he is participating this year on our annual experience in Poland working with foster children:

“Simply put, there is nothing like working with Canisius students. To me, Canisius is more of a home and a family than a job with acquaintances and the opportunity to experience a service immersion trip with some of our most passionate students is something I couldn’t pass-up. I look forward to mentoring, learning, growing and laughing all while in service with our students this summer in Poland.”

Shoes for Shelter is Coming

Hoak-2013The 18th Annual Shoes for Shelter 5K is coming to Canisius on Sunday, April 10. Our annual event serves a few purposes:

  1. It collects shoes to be donated to St. Vincent DePaul. So far, 32,000 pairs of shoes have been collected. So, if you are doing some winter or spring cleaning, please bring your shoes to the Koessler Athletic Center Room 181 any time prior to the event.
  2. It promotes a health and wellness initiative on campus. Whether you walk, jog or run, it always serves as a great opportunity to get outside for some great exercise with your friends and co-workers. All levels of walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. Awards are given out to everyone from elementary school age to over 90.
  3. It serves as a benefit for the Blue & Gold Fund – the organization that supports Canisius athletics.
