Our dear friend and colleague Michael Colquhoun, PhD, passed away on Friday, January 8. Mike was a well-known composer, arranger, performer of the flute and teacher who was active in the Canisius and greater Buffalo communities. His courses in global and Afrocentric music were very popular with Canisius students and he was the recipient of an excellence in teaching award.

Mike performed regularly on campus and throughout the Buffalo area in various musical groups, including Los Caribes, a Latin-American ensemble he headed. He had a number of his works published and made recordings of his own music and with Los Caribes, all of which were critically well received. Recently, to mark an important artistic anniversary, a retrospective concert of his compositions was performed in the Montante Cultural Center. Mike was generous with his talents and always had encouraging words and expert advice for young composers who participated in the music composition competition sponsored by the college. He will be greatly missed by the Fine Arts Department. Rest in peace, friend.

The family will be present on Wednesday, January 13 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Delaware Chapel Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Avenue at West Ferry. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions will be accepted to the Michael W. Colquhoun Music Trust.
