Richard Reitsma, PhD, chair of modern languages, literatures and cultures and associate professor of Spanish and Latin American studies, was selected for inclusion in Loop Magazine’s end of the year list, which recognizes 50 members of the LGBT community for their achievements and contributions to the Western New York community.

At Canisius, Reitsma coordinates a speaker series he founded in 2011, which focuses on LGBT and Latino-Latin American culture-makers. He takes students on study trips to Cuba and Costa Rica, on campus ministry service trips, and is the faculty advisor to UNITY, Canisius’ gay/straight alliance.

Reistma also started the college’s first Lavender graduation, which honors LGBT and ally students for their contributions to the school community.
