Canisius College will present a lecture entitled, “Cuba: Developing New Relationships,” on Monday, November 23 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. in Science Hall. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will feature guest speakers R. William Franklin, Episcopal Bishop of Western New York, and Kelvin Lee, MD, Jacobs Family Chair in Immunology, Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Bishop William Franklin of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York was one of 12 bishops of the Episcopal Church who visited Cuba in April 2015. The bishops were invited by the Bisho p of Cuba as a first step in reuniting the Episcopal Church of Cuba with The Episcopal Church. Bishop Franklin will share his impressions of Cuba and thoughts on the process of rebuilding connections with institutions in Cuba after decades of separation.
Lee and his Roswell Park colleagues have collaborated with scientists from the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Cuba for several years, and hope to bring several CIM-developed cancer treatment vaccines to the U.S. through clinical research studies. He will discuss his recent visits to Cuba, including his participation in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s April 2015 trade mission to the island nation, and the potential for U.S.–Cuba biotech partnerships more broadly.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the Canisius College Department of Campus Ministry, the Department of Latin American Studies, the George E. Schreiner ’43 Pre-Medical Center, and the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
