The current series of work by Augustina Droze continues her fascination with Momento Mori. She places decorative arrangements of deceased animals, feathers and insects into spirals, rings and mounds to remind the viewer of the temporal nature of life. The arrangements also illustrate man’s domination and manipulation of nature. Instead of respecting our surroundings, we bend them to meet our needs. For Droze, this is depicted visually by posing dead animals into mesmerizing patterns. The work draws the viewer in with vivid colors and detail, and simultaneously repulses by the realization of the carnage, which is on view.
