Learn About Texas SURF Camps

This past week, a recent Canisius graduate, Mollie Morgan ’15, volunteered at two SURF camps for children with autism in Port Aransas, Texas. Learning through Sun, Sand and SURF is a social skills curriculum developed to be used in schools and in Surf Camps for students on the autism spectrum. Campers learn how to surf with their families, participate in arts and crafts activities, various beach games and learn how to build sandcastles by a professional sandcastle builder.

Pictured here are volunteers for the first camp.

This year marks the seventh anniversary of the camp. Lauren Cavanaugh, PhD, one of the camp directors, is always looking for energetic volunteers for the camp each summer.

For more information, please visit their Facebook page or contact Dr. Cavanaugh at Ext. 8264 or at cavanau7@canisius.edu.

ARTY Workshop Combines Art, Robotics and Technology

An innovative week-long robotics workshop for middle school students culminated with a robot parade on Friday, July 17, in Science Hall.   The 2015 Art, Robotics and Technology for Youth (ARTY) Summer Workshop is a collaboration between Canisius, the University at Buffalo’s Techne Institute and AT&T.

The ARTY summer workshop, administered by Sarah Bay-Cheng, PhD, director of UB’s Techne Institute, and led by Debbie Burhans, PhD, associate professor of computer science at Canisius, is a contemporary alternative to the traditional practice of teaching robotics through programming camps built around competition, robot battles and simulated warfare. Students work with UB and Canisius artists and engineers to integrate their lessons in computer science, sensors, circuits, electronic music and design into the final program.

In addition to the workshop’s inventive art and technology curriculum, the entire ARTY experience is couched in a unique architecture of multi-tiered mentoring, an expansion to the program made possible by a contribution of more than $16,000 from AT&T.

High school students who have been specifically trained for the week-long workshop mentor ARTY participants. Those high school students in turn are mentored by college and graduate students who are led by faculty.

New York State Senator Timothy M. Kennedy addressed the students as part of the workshop’s finale and presented each participant with a congratulatory certificate.

Watch highlights from the robot parade here.

Serve Buffalo’s Homeless with Campus Ministry and the Burrito Project

Faculty, staff and their family members are invited to join the office of campus ministry and the Buffalo Burrito Project on Tuesday, July 28.

Father Patrick Lynch, S.J., and Joshua Russell, PhD, animal behavior, conservation and ecology, work together preparing snacks during last month’s Burrito Project.

Burritos will be prepared in our kitchen, located in the Undercroft of Christ the King Chapel, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. From 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., the group will walk a four-mile route and serve about 80 burritos, snacks and cold drinks. A campus ministry van follows the team as we walk.

You may choose to help prepare the burritos, prepare and serve or just serve. Most people do both.

To sign-up, simply email Joe Van Volkenburg at vanvolkj@canisius.edu. Please include name, email and cell number. Thank you for your consideration.
