Thanks to the kindness of community organizations and our very own staff members, the Center for Community-Based Learning was able to help the Somali-Bantu community to set-up a classroom in their center. Students from Dr. David Devereux’s History of Modern Africa class painted the room in blue and yellow, the colors of the Somali flag. The paint was donated by Home Depot. Rugs were donated by CarpetSmart and finally, desks and a blackboard were donated by the generous people in facilities management: Tom Ciminelli and Kevin Kwitzer. Kevin even took care of getting everything to its location. The plan is to have an afterschool program for children and an ESL program for adults. Many people need help with English. If anyone wishes to be part of this, please let me know. You would be very welcome! We have many women and men with and for others on our campus. They are helping to show the Buffalo community that Canisius cares.
