More than 500 high school students from throughout Western New York will participate in the Lake Erie/Niagara Regional NYS Science Olympiad hosted by Canisius College and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry on Saturday, January 31from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Science Hall. The competition, which is free and open to the public, includes many exciting and visually interesting science events, including:
- Bridge – students will test the strength of their strategically-designed wood bridge structures
- Bungee Drop – students will drop a mass attached to an elastic cord from a given height and attempt to get the mass as close to the ground without letting it touch the ground
- Mission Possible – students will demonstrate homemade Rube Goldberg-like machines to perform a series of energy transfers
- Game On – students will create their own video game using basic programming skills
- Scrambler – students will design and build a device that safely transports an egg a specified distance and path
An awards ceremony will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The top four teams will advance to the New York State Science Olympiad competition to be held at LeMoyne College on March 13-14, 2015.
