Public Safety Holiday Needy Drive

The 14th Annual Public Safety Holiday Needy Drive is now underway to ensure that many local families have a better holiday season. Faculty and staff are encouraged to bring donations of warm clothes, blankets and toys to the Public Safety Briefing Room. Cash donations are also welcome.

In the past, the Holiday Needy Drive has assisted many families who may not be able to buy their children toys. The donations will be delivered to The Ladies of Charity Christmas Program. The Ladies of Charity Buffalo, NY is a volunteer organization of Catholic Charities of Buffalo.

The donations will be delivered at a date to be announced.

Safe Computing Tips

For most of us, whether we are at work or at home, our computer has become an indispensable tool. Therefore, it’s important to periodically ensure that it is working both properly and securely. Your Windows office computer is set up with preventative measures to keep it as safe as possible. Updates to software, including virus definitions, are automatically applied, and there are spam filters in place for campus email. However, because of newer threats or temporary software problems, it is wise to keep an eye on unusual happenings in the office, and to ensure that patches are applied. Here are some simple precautionary rules for both home and office:

• Do not open email attachments or follow links from unknown sources
• Check your virus software to make sure that it is up-to-date and run scans on a regular basis (for your home computer, Microsoft Security Essentials is reliable and free)
• Install necessary software patches as they often fix security holes
• Back up any critical files regularly. On campus, your network drive can be used for backups. At home, a flash drive, or portable hard drive is a smart and economical investment.
