Local Media Cover President Hurley’s Convocation Address

President Hurley’s Convocation address is getting the attention of the local media.

The Buffalo News and Business First both reported, at length, on President Hurley’s vision for Canisius’ future, which he outlined in his state-of-the-college address on Thursday, September 4.

On Friday, September 5, WBFO’s (88.7) senior reporter Eileen Buckley interviewed President Hurley about his plans to revitalize academic programs, redefine Canisius as a student-centered university  and pursue an innovative business model.

The President’s Convocation traditionally marks the start of a new academic year. It’s an opportunity for President Hurley to outline his priorities for Canisius in the year ahead, as well as his long-term goals for the college’s future.

During his address, President Hurley spoke about the external forces at work in higher education and where he foresees these changes taking Canisius. He then spoke about three key strategic moves which will enable Canisius “to become one of the true innovators in American higher education.”

Dr. Norma Nowak, Expert in Human Genomics, To Speak Homecoming Weekend

The Dr. George E. Schreiner ’43 Pre-Medical Distinguished Speaker Series at Canisius College will host Norma J. Nowak, PhD, director of science and technology for the University at Buffalo New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, on Thursday, September 25 at 7 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. Nowak’s lecture, entitled “The Future is Upon Us: Your Genome and Your Health,” is free and open to the public.

P.W. Singer, Expert on 21st Century Warfare, To Speak on Campus

P.W. Singer, PhD, senior fellow and director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institution, will speak at Canisius College on Wednesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. Singer’s lecture, entitled “Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know,” is free and open to the public. The event is presented by The William H. Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series.
