The Contemporary Music Ensemble, under the direction of Jeff Jeckovich, led the 9:30 p.m. Sunday night Mass on April 27 by singing classic rock songs with a spiritual theme to a rousing crowd of nearly 200, including President John Hurley, at the Rockin’ and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door Mass.
Fr. Bob Pecoraro, SJ presided at the Mass and played lead guitar on Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” which is based on Isaiah 21:5-9 and was written and performed originally by Bob Dylan. Dylan also featured prominently in the Mass with “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” which was used as a call to worship reflection.
Other featured artists and songs included the Doobie Bros. with “Jesus is Just Alright,” Norman Greenbaum’s one hit wonder, “Spirit in the Sky,” The Beatles’ “Let It Be,” a unique and gospel-like post-communion version of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Fr. Pecoraro performed again on lead guitar for Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
Student performers included: Beth Rakowski, president of CME and Bass Guitarist, Kaitlin Garrity, vice president of CME, Cory Young, treasurer and Monica Wrobel, secretary all provided vocals along with, Carrie Ann Rybczynski, Cecilia Marini, Nicole Fusco, Conor Toomb, Abby Rogers, Kaitlin Buehlmann, and Arrianna Robinson. Anne Continetti and Jenny Wachala performed on flute and Michael Lillis rocked out on drums.
