More than 500 high school students from throughout the state will participate in the 30th Annual New York State Science Olympiad this Saturday, February 1 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Science Hall. The competition, which is free and open to the public, includes several dozen exciting and visually interesting science demonstrations, including:
- Boomilever – students will test the strength of their strategically-designed wood structures, which will be attached to a wall from a single point or an area that holds weight
- Elastic Launched Glider – students will test homebuilt gliders launched using an elastic band
- Mission Possible – students will demonstrate homemade Rube Goldberg-like machines to perform a series of energy transfers
An awards ceremony will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The top performing junior at the Olympiad will be offered Canisius College’s top scholarship for the incoming freshman class in fall 2015. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony.
