Town Hall Meetings

President John J. Hurley is pleased to invite all faculty and staff to attend the first of four Town Hall Meetings on Monday, February 11 at 3:00 – 4 p.m. in the Regis Room – North.

These Town Hall Meetings will provide opportunities to carry on an open dialogue about the Strategic Assessment and to discuss other topics that are on people’s minds. The president will provide regular updates on the status of the college and report on progress with the Strategic Assessment. The Town Halls are intended to be not only informative, but also to facilitate an exchange of ideas.

The purpose of the February 11th meeting is to provide faculty and staff with an additional opportunity to ask President Hurley and the vice presidents questions about what was presented at the recent forums on the strategic assessment and to share concerns and suggestions.

Future Town Halls have been scheduled for:
· Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at noon in Regis North
· Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. in Regis North
· Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. in Regis North

Services Planned for James Valone

Funeral arrangements are now in place for James S. Valone, PhD, emeritus professor of history and former associate dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business. Valone passed away on Monday, February 4 following a long battle with leukemia. He was 78.

A wake for Valone and his late wife, Geraldine, who passed away on January 28, will be held this evening, from
3:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m. at the Dietrich Funeral Home, located at 2480 Kensington Ave., Amherst.

On Friday, February 8, prayers for the couple will be offered at 9:00 a.m. at the Dietrich Funeral Home prior to a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church at 30 Lamarck Drive at Main Street in Snyder.

An interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery will take place at 11:00 a.m. followed by a 12:00 noon reception for family and friends in the Grupp Fireside Lounge, on the second floor of the Richard E. Winter Student Center.

Valone marked 50 years of service to Canisius College in May 2011. In November 2012, Canisius President John J. Hurley conferred upon Valone the rank of professor emeritus.

“Jim Valone personified all that is great about Canisius College,” says President Hurley, who took several of Valone’s courses as an undergraduate. “Every class was innovative, challenging and rewarding, and my life and career were made immensely richer because of my experiences with Jim. He was a superior teacher and scholar who had the interests of his students at the core of everything he did.”

A longtime member of the college’s History Department, Valone primarily taught medieval and early modern European history. He specialized in the politics of Huguenot assemblies in the early part of the 17th century, and published a book on the topic in 1994.

Valone was also the architect of the History Honors Program, which provided undergraduate history majors with research opportunities that rivaled post-graduate programs. Valone developed honors courses in historiography and research methods, which he continued to teach throughout his entire career. His devotion to students in this program was evidenced by a large file cabinet, which included academic papers from every history honors student Valone ever taught.

In addition to his appointment in the History Department, Valone served more than three decades as associate dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business. In this role, he advised students in the School of Business. Valone was an expert in the business curriculum and was noted for being able to advise large numbers of students through the course of an academic year. When asked why he assumed the added responsibilities, since he was already such a highly-regarded professor, Valone replied simply, “The students.” It’s estimated he advised tens of thousands of Canisius undergraduates during his tenure as dean.

“Though Dr. Valone’s scholarship focused on studying and teaching history, his greatest contribution to Canisius and the legacy for which we remember him, will be for helping to shape the futures of so many Canisius students,” says Antone (“Joe”) Alber, PhD, dean of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business.

Valone’s devotion to Canisius students was further evidenced in 2007 when he and his wife established the Geraldine G. and James S. Valone, PhD, Endowed Scholarship, as a way to assist students who have financial needs. At the time he established the scholarship, Valone said, “I spent my entire career guiding students at Canisius and saw that the biggest challenge they faced was often financial. The scholarship is another way I can help students to graduate from Canisius.”

Valone earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Penn State University. He pursued his doctoral studies at the University of Michigan.

Valone is survived by his four sons, Stephen, Thomas, David and Robert; and four grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Judith and brother, Richard.

Canisius Students Spend Winter Break Serving

More than 75 Canisius College students participated in the college’s Winter Service Week, during the month of January. Organized by the Canisius Office of Campus Ministry, Winter Service Week provides students with opportunities to serve, work and learn in some of the poorest communities across the country. All trips are centered around service, reflection and prayer, community and simple living. This year’s Winter Service Week sent students to different locations in New Orleans, LA; New York City, NY; Erie, PA, Syracuse, NY; and Buffalo, NY.
