The Canisius College Department of Physical Education/Health Education is hosting a contingent of 20 physical education teachers from the Shanghai University of Sport, Shanghai, China; from November 5 – December 21. The group is participating in a seven week-long training program on American physical education curriculum organized by Jeffrey Lindauer, PhD, chair and associate professor of kinesiology and Clancy Seymour, MS, instructor of kinesiology.
Participants take classes from Canisius faculty, hear guest speakers, conduct research and observe physical education classes at local schools including Tapestry Charter School, Sacred Heart High School and the Kenmore Tonawanda School District.
“I hope to gain a better understanding of the American physical education system and analyze the differences between the American and Chinese systems,” says Li Yao, who has taught physical education in China for 22 years. “China’s physical education is not as organized or regulated. Students in China do not sit down and listen for instruction. The teacher announces the activity, the students begin to play, and the teacher then instructs the students how to perform the activity individually.”
In addition, the Shanghai teachers attended the 75th Annual Conference of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Inc. from November 14 – 17 in Verona, NY. The group attended several athletic events including a Canisius men’s basketball game and a Cleveland Cavaliers NBA game in Cleveland, OH.
At the end of the program, the group will present the results of their research on American physical education programs.

ITS reminds all Canisius students, faculty and staff to be green over the holidays by recycling wrapping and packaging as much as possible throughout the Christmas season. Also, don’t forget that any old or broken electronics can be brought to campus for recycling.
Bring in any used cell phones, empty printer cartridges, tablets, iPods, MP3 players, rechargeable batteries, or laptops. Many of these items can be donated to Operation Gratitude and other worth-while programs. A deposit station is located in the Old Main Internet plaza on the second floor. Larger items such as laser toner cartridges and laptops should be delivered via campus mail or dropped off to ITS for recycling. For questions or more information, contact Scott Clark in ITS at Ext. 8357 or clarks@canisius.edu.
