AIDS Quilt on Display at Canisius this week

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is on display in the Grupp Fireside Lounge between 10am and 5pm this Thursday (11/29) and Friday (11/30). All members of the Canisius College community are encouraged to stop by and take a few minutes to quietly reflect on the impact of the AIDS epidemic.

Founded in 1987, The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world.

Each “block” (or section) of The AIDS Memorial Quilt measures approximately twelve feet square, and a typical block consists of eight individual three foot by six foot panels sewn together. Virtually every one of the more than 40,000 colorful panels that make up the Quilt memorializes the life of a person lost to AIDS.

As the epidemic continues claiming lives around the world and here in the United States, the Quilt continues to grow and to reach more communities with its messages of remembrance, awareness and hope.

This event is sponsored by Unity. For more information please contact Unity at unity@canisius.edu.

Canisius College Chorale to Perform On Campus and in Annunciation Church, Elma

The Canisius College Chorale, under the direction of Frank Scinta, will continue its 2012 Sacred Spaces concert series with two programs:

  • Saturday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, Canisius College, 2001 Main Street, Buffalo, NY
  • Sunday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Annunciation Church, 7580 Clinton Street, Elma, NY

The concerts will feature works by Vivaldi, Lotti, Hogan, Dawson and others. Admission to both events is free.

Sacred Spaces stems from an idea the choir proposed seven years ago to feature its music in some of Western New York’s most beautiful and acoustically resonant environments – namely, the sanctuaries of our area’s churches. As a result, the choir has visited nearly forty present and former houses of worship with its repertoire of sacred and secular music spanning five centuries.

Now in its fifteenth season, The Canisius College Chorale remains one of Western New York’s most active collegiate music ensembles. Composed of 120 undergraduate and graduate members, the chorale regularly presents concert programs to school, church, and community audiences throughout Western New York and Southern Ontario. In recent years, the Chorale has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Ars Nova Chamber Musicians, Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
