Canisius College is proud to host the 107th Topical Meeting of the NY State Section of the American Physical Society on October 19 and 20, 2012. The topic this Fall is the “Physics of Water.” The symposium is intended as a tutorial in nature, and students as well as physicists from industry, government, and academia are invited to attend. There will be invited talks, a student research poster session, banquet, and a keynote lecture.
Water is an abundant and valuable substance. It covers approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface and is necessary for all forms of life. Today, research of water is revealing many fascinating and unexpected properties. The invited talks will cover such topics as:
- Mpemba effect
- hydrophobic materials
- hydrogeology and groundwater
- clouds and climate
- quantum mechanical effects of ice and water
The keynote lecture will be given by Dr. Robin E. Bell of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. Dr. Bell conducts research on ice-sheet dynamics and subglacial environments. Her talk is titled “Changes at the Poles”.
