The department of kinesiology’s hosts its spring 2012 seminar series on Thursday (March 22) at 4 p.m. in G21 Koessler Athletic Center. Lauren Cavanaugh, PhD, assistant professor of kinesiology, presents “Can Surfing Affect the Social Skills of Students with Autism?” The seminar series is free and open to all who wish to attend.

Children with autism demonstrate poor social skills, social competence, and a lowered self-esteem. For the past 3 years, a surf camp in Texas has incorporated a social skills curriculum to assist in the improvement of social skills for their campers. This presentation will provide a brief description of the surf camp, its curriculum, as well as a review of the research.

An additional seminar entitled, “Professional Options Available as a Health/Wellness Professional” will be presented by Chuck Pelitera, MS, CSCS on Thursday, April 19.
