Two upcoming events are scheduled to examine issues of animal language research specifically with chimpanzees.
Tonight (January 19) at 6:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, a screening of the documentary Project Nim will be held. Project Nim is an award-winning documentary that follows the life of one particular chimpanzee that was used in animal language research. This thought provoking film will influence the way attendees think about animals in research generally, and about how people deal with chimpanzees specifically.
On Friday (January 20) at 7 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, Stephanie LaFarge, PhD will speak on her own experiences with chimp language research, her role in the making of Project Nim, and about her perspectives on animal use in research. LaFarge was a graduate research assistant on the chimpanzee language project Project Nim when it took place during the 1970’s. Since that time, she has had a distinguished career as a clinical psychologist and as an advocate of animal welfare.

The Canisius vs. Niagara Battle of the Bridge doubleheader, scheduled for the Koessler Atheltic Center tonight (January 19) will welcome ESPN3 which will telecast the games live. The School of Education and Human Services will host two open meetings next week to share with the Canisius College community the plans for the Educational Partnership Organization (EPO) with Waterfront Elementary School. The meetings will take place in Old Main Room 223 on Wednesday, January 25, from Noon – 1:30 p.m. and Friday, January 27, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. All faculty and staff are invited to this session by Michael Pardales, PhD, dean of the School of Education & Human Services, and David Hills, principal of Waterfront Elementary School.
The Waterfront School was identified by the State of New York as Persistently Low Achieving (PLA). In partnership with the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University, Canisius College submitted a proposal to partner with Waterfront and its faculty, leadership, and parents to improve student achievement at the school.
Approved by the Buffalo Public Schools and the Buffalo Board of Education, the Canisius College EPO proposal awaits final approval from the State Education Department. Once approved, the work begins July 1 and is supported by New York State for three years.

The Golden Griffin swimming and diving teams look to complete a successful regular season Saturday (January 21) when they host Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center pool.

Canisius will look to continue its chain of success, which has seen them shatter six school records and nine pool marks this year. Three meter diving will take place from 11 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, with all of the swimming and remainder of diving events running from 1 – 3:30 p.m.
Following Saturday’s meet, Canisius will host the MAAC Championship at the Flickinger Center from February 16-18.
