Canisius COMDOC Print/Copy/Scan Program

New copier/printer/scanners are beginning to arrive on campus to increase capability, improve service, reduce cost, and create a greener campus.  Departments will not see an upfront cost as the colleges moves to a per page pricing model.  Those costs are:

Xerox Black/White – $.008/page
Xerox Color – $.22/page
HP Black/White – $.035/page

Costs include all supplies except paper.  COMDOC will be the source for both supplies (except paper) and maintenance needs.  As part of the green initiative, please take advantage of the scanning capabilities to send documents electronically instead of by paper.  When paper is needed, consider the most cost effective means to create your document, including the Print Shop.

As the program progresses, please direct questions or concerns to Frank Kirstein, Director of Computer Infrastructure, at kirstein@canisius.edu.

Lab Software Requests Needed By June 1

ITS is currently making maintenance plans for the labs and Instructional Technology Classrooms (ITCs).  If specialized software is required for courses taught in labs, please make a request Wednesday, June 1 to assure installation in the labs and ITCs.

For Windows software, please contact Lisa Mastropaolo at Ext. 8376 or mastropl@canisius.edu.  For Macintosh software, please contact Scott Clark at Ext. 8357 or clarks@canisius.edu.

All Windows lab and ITC machines will be upgraded from Office 2007 to Office 2010 for the fall semester.  Macintosh lab and ITC computers were upgraded to Office 2011 in January.  There will be no file compatibility issues – files created in one version of MS Office can be opened and edited in the other.  However, faculty who wish to have their office computers upgraded to these newer versions should contact the ITS Help Desk to make arrangements.

Malware Hits The Macintosh

It was only a matter of time.  A rogue anti-malware program called MACDefender, which attacks Macintosh computers, has started to appear on the Internet.

When a user clicks on a link after performing a search using Google or another search engine, they are taken to a website which contains a nefarious JavaScript that automatically downloads a file.  If a specific option in a web browser is checked (open “safe” files after downloading in Safari, for example), the file will be automatically opened.  The file is decompressed, and the installer it contains launches presenting a user with a screen to install MACDefender software.  ITS asks that Mac users do not proceed and quit this installer.

If a user continues through the installation process, and enters an administrator’s password, this malware software will be installed.  It is important that users NOT continue with any unexpected installation of this type.  For now, the threat is low, but users should be careful not to install software when installers open unexpectedly.

Those Mac users who have any questions about software being installed or fear a computer is infected with this software, please call the ITS Help Desk at Ext. 2299.
