The Canisius softball team, in need of victories in order to qualify for the MAAC Tournament, hosts Niagara University today (April 27) at 3 p.m. with multiple implications on the line.
First and foremost, the twin bill counts in the MAAC standings. The Griffs enter Wednesday’s games tied for sixth with a 4-6 league record, while the Purple Eagles are in a three-way tie for third with a 5-3 mark.
Secondly, the games will be pivotal in claiming annual bragging rights for the The Battle of the Bridge competition. Canisius currently leads the rivalry by the score of 15-12, with 17 points needed to re-claim the Canal Cup trophy. Each softball game is worth one point, so a Griffs sweep clinches the cup for the third time in five years.
Finally, the game is also the Griffs inaugural “Beat Cancer With a Bat” initiative. Interested parties can donate to the cause at the game, by calling Ext. 8484 or by clicking here.
