On Wednesday (April 6) at 5 p.m. in Regis South, Matthew Lenoe, PhD, professor of history at the University of Rochester, will give a lecture on the assassination of Sergei Kirov which took place December 1, 1934.
Lenoe will examine whether Josef Stalin was responsible for the assassination which is believed to have been the reason used by Stalin to round up undesirables and purge the Communist Party leadership of political opposition. As a result of this assassination, more than 700,000 people were executed in the following years, and hundreds of thousands more ended up in the Gulag.
