My student Laura Smith and I are investigating the quality of milkweed resources at the local and landscape levels along and rural-urban gradient in Western New York. Specifically, we are trying to determine the definition and availability of quality habitat for Monarch butterflies in the greater Buffalo region by measuring availability of milkweed, floral resources, presence of other arthropods, and soil conditions. These data are collected across the landscape in urban, suburban, and rural locations. We are also collecting landscape-level data in the form of human vs. natural infrastructure. We will use these data to create a habitat quality model for Monarchs in the greater Buffalo region and scale it up to ideas for general urban conservation.
