My presentation will explore the application of group theory to understand the symmetry of chemical molecules by associating them to appropriate point groups. We can then look at the character tables of these point groups and see how they encode important symmetrical properties. Utilizing group representation theory, we can see where these characters in the character tables come from and how they provide insight into molecular vibrations and electronic orbitals. It can also be shown how tools like Infrared and Raman spectroscopy rely on these insights. In my talk, I will show a few specific examples of molecules and their associated point groups to illustrate.

Your presentation topic sounds incredible! I like that you have chosen to extend mathematical concepts to chemistry. I had never even considered that math topics could be used to understand the symmetry of chemical molecules, but this sounds like a fascinating application! I look forward to hearing your explanation of group theory’s applications in chemistry, and I applaud you for researching such an amazing topic!
I look forward to hearing your talk. applying somewhat abstract concepts like general groups to a specific field like chemistry sounds like an interesting endeavor and I look forward to seeing how you approach it.
Chemistry and math all in one presentation, i cannot think of a better combination! Your talk sounds like it will be captivating, i cannot wait to come!
Chemistry is somethings that has always been confusing to me. My 10th grade chemistry class was very challenging. I’m looking forward to this talk so maybe I can understand how chemistry interacts with Math.
Hope, I loved your talk on group theory in chemistry! Abstract algebra was one of my favorite math courses so far and I have a substantial background in chemistry, so it was really neat to see how these fields interact. It was really interesting to talk about the spectroscopy methods in relation to math too because we use those methods all the time in chemistry labs. Super fascinating!
I thought your talk was very interesting, Hope! I had taken chemistry in high school and knew it could be related to math but it was interesting to see your presentation on it. I think it’s fascinating how you were able to draw the connection between them
