The semester is well underway! Students are deep into the throws of their work and possibly recovering from mid-term assignments.  This has been a very exciting semester for us at Canisius.  By now you have heard the news that Canisius is lowering its published tuition price by 23% beginning in the fall of 2018.  Through Excellence Within Reach we’re taking a leadership role in addressing the national issue of college affordability.  The rise in tuition and fees at private colleges and universities and confusing financial aid packaging has seemingly put the idea of a private education out of reach for many students.  I know there are many questions about what the tuition reset means for our current students, so I encourage you to visit our website for more information and responses to Frequently Asked Questions.

Canisius also joins colleges and universities across the country in supporting DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) advocacy efforts.  We participated in the national DACA Higher Education Week (October 16-20) to bring important attention to these issues. The talents, contributions, and experiences of DACA recipients enrich our society, our classrooms, and our economy in vast ways, but termination of the program leaves hundreds of thousands of young people, who find themselves in the US through no act of their own, at risk for deportation and an uncertain fate.  As a Catholic, Jesuit institution, Canisius has a special obligation to do what we can to help ensure a promising future for these people.  I urge members of the Canisius College community to become personally involved with this important human rights issue.  Here is a link through the American Council on Education that will help you contact your representatives with this critical message of support:

These and many, many other efforts at Canisius emanate from our Jesuit values and the core mission of the college: to provide a transformative learning experience for our students.  We take a holistic approach to education and strive to care for them in mind, body and spirit.  As you’ll read in this month’s newsletter, there are a number of ways for Canisius students to get the very most out of their undergraduate experience – in the classroom and beyond.
