Health Requirements

Some of our new students are still missing some or all of their health requirements.
These requirements include a complete physical examination done within the last year, and the New York State mandated immunization requirements. Details about the health requirements for new undergraduate students can be found on the Student Health Center web page.

Students have been notified of any outstanding items via campus email over the past three weeks. Please ask your student if they have received any messages from Student Health about missing health requirements. Direct them to come to the Student Health Office (Lower level of Frisch Hall) and ask what they are missing if they received this email. In many cases, forms can be completed right in the office.

Students who are missing immunization records that demonstrate compliance with New York State PHL 2165 and 2167 will be withdrawn from class on or around September 26, 2018. Once withdrawn, there is a $300 fee to be reinstated. Withdrawn students who reside on campus will have to leave college housing.

If your student is under the age of 18, and has a missing physical examination requirement, it may mean that there is no parental consent on file in Student Health to authorize Student Health to treat your student. Student Health encourages parents / guardians of minor students to check with Student Health to be sure a consent is on file.

It is best to reach Student Health via email at health@canisius.edu. While it is a busy time, emails are answered within a day or two.

Flu Shots

Influenza or flu strikes campus each year and is known to negatively impact students’ academic progress. College students across the United States frequently say that getting sick with the flu was a reason for a lower grade in a class or class assignment. In addition, getting sick with the flu has a financial impact on college students. Students with the flu are often too sick to go to work which can lead to lost wages. Students may also have to pay for expensive over the counter medicines or prescriptions and in some cases incur expenses for an urgent care or hospital visit.

Student Health recommends that all students get an annual flu shot. To make this easier for Canisius students, Student Health and Wegmans will be teaming up to provide flu shots on campus on the following dates:
October 2 in Science Hall from 8:30 am to 4 pm
October 22 from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Student Center.

Students must be 18 years of age to be vaccinated. Students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Students will need to bring their health insurance ID card with them when they get vaccinated. Parents should contact their health insurance carrier to see if their student is covered for flu shots offered by Wegmans Pharmacy. The cost of the flu shot without insurance is $39.99.

Student Health recommends that parents prepare for the flu by packing a sick kit for their student.
This should include:
• digital thermometer
• Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
• Ibuprofen (Advil)
• Cough suppressant
• Cough drops
• Decongestants such as pseudephrine
• Hand sanitizer
• Tissues
• Tea
• Chicken soup
• Gatorade packets to mix with water to replace lost electrolytes

The college book store has a supply of over the counter cold and flu products for symptom relief.
