Looking back on how my internship unfolded this semester, I can see it turned out much different than what I thought it was going to be. At the beginning of the semester, I wrote down goals that I wanted to achieve by the end of my internship. While I didn’t achieve all the goals I set for myself, I have noticed that I accomplished things I didn’t even write down. One thing that I noticed was that I found myself being very open to new and developing ideas. Oftentimes, when I would go to film with the person I was interviewing I would have an outline of how I wanted the day to go, however, the day never usually played out that way. One example was when I was filming with a local artist, we were almost done with the shoot when they informed the videographer and I that their art was on display in a building not too far from where we were. We all decided to go and I was able to visit an art gallery, I would have never known existed. Another time I found myself and someone I was interviewing, cheering for a team during the World Cup, an event I had never really watched before.

One of my goals was to shape who I want to be as a journalist and while I still have a long way to go, I find that I want to start my career as someone who doesn’t stick to the script because I found myself creating stories that I never could have imagined because of it.
