Back on October 15, I attended a virtual networking event through Zoom that was hosted by Deuce Mason, play-by-play broadcaster for the Stockton Kings of the NBA G-League (second tier basketball league). While he was the MC of the event, more G-League broadcasters joined him to offer their expertise in the field to those pursuing the industry such as myself. Among those also present were Cleveland Charge PXP man Scott Zurilla, Capital City Go-Go play-by-play broadcaster Meghan McPeak, Westchester Knicks PXP man David Resnick, Austin Spurs PXP man Dan Weiss, and Ontario Clippers PXP man Brian Arrington. It was fascinating to be in the virtual presence of these professionals at one time, especially because they work all across the country. It was also interesting to hear from varying perspectives, as people of color and women in the industry were all present. Each broadcaster explained how they got started in the field, what led them to be at the positions they hold today, and how a game day at each of their positions normally operates. A common theme among all six broadcasters was that they never turned down an opportunity, they consistently reached out to already established professionals within the industry for assistance as well as leads, and they didn’t always have a play-by-play spot; many started as either general interns at sports media companies or news stations with duties such as camera operation and assistants to those in higher positions. After each broadcaster talked about themselves individually, participants were put in breakout rooms with the various broadcasters, and we got to introduce ourselves, explain what we are currently involved with, and what our career goals are. Each broadcaster then offered personalized advice and recommendations, and contact information to stay in touch. I felt that this part was extremely valuable to be included within the event, as we now have multiple professionals within the industry to check in with. I definitely enjoyed this experience and will take away significant value from it. I look forward to participating in another similar event when another is announced, and I will be eager to check in with the broadcasters from this event to keep in contact and share news. Another thank you goes out to Deuce Mason for hosting!
