Hello everyone! My name is Griffin Della Penna, and I’m double majoring in Sports Journalism and Strategic Communication, along with a Leadership minor.
For my senior year, I am interning with the Canisius College Athletics department as a Multimedia Reporter. After spending nearly a full calendar year with Pegula Sports & Entertainment as a Media & Content intern this seemed to be the best stepping stone to apply everything I’ve learned. In July, I pitched some of my ideas on how we could reshape our coverage to make it emulate what other NCAA Division 1 schools across the country are doing.
I am so grateful for my position because I don’t think there are many individuals with a similar job title to me who are still in undergrad. My mentality since starting in early August has been to highlight athletes by giving them the coverage that they deserve. I’ve implented new video content like “Around Canisius Athletics,” and “The Griffin Report” Podcast. It’s very importnant to me for all of our 18 teams at Canisius to get fair and equal coverage as well because I feel like in the past some teams have been neglected.
On top of my duties as a reporter, I also do play-by-play commentary for our ESPN 3 broadcasts for sports like volleyball, soccer, baseball, and softball. When I’m not doing play-by-play, I also have a role in the broadcasts as a sideline reporter interviewing players and coaches for Canisius. It has been a really cool experience having great feedback to my content, and I’ve already seen lots of improvement in the last few weeks.
This is such a valuble experience not just to give back to the school that I care so deeply about, but also to gain an incredible amount of reps that will be extremely beneficial when I’m applying for jobs after I graduate in May. It’ll be cool to look back in a few months and see how I’ve settled into the role.
