With one week left in the Buffalo Sabres season, it is a perfect time for me to reflect on my whirlwind inaugural season working in professional sports. When I take a step back and look at my growth from my first day with Pegula Sports & Entertainment back in September in comparison to now, I’m so proud to see how far I’ve come.

Not just in necessary attributes in my desired career like my writing skills, but also my confidence and feeling that I belong in a professional work environment, my ability to work in teams collaboratively, and being able to manage a hectic/demanding work schedule on top of my class load at Canisius.

My own personal experiences with the company have similar parallels to the Sabres team on the ice, as the youthful group has shown their potential for long-term success during the second half of the season, which has been very cool to watch from up close. Along with the Sabres success as of late, the Buffalo Bandits have also made my job as a beat writer extremely entertaining as the top team in the entire National Lacrosse League with a 14-3 record.

They go into the upcoming NLL playoffs as the #1 seed in the East Divison with home-field advantage. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to travel with the team throughout the playoff run as they look to win their first championship since 2008. The Bandits have been a great stepping stone for me to ease into the demand that being a beat writer requires, especially earlier this month when the team played four games in eight days (when the team is more accustomed to playing just one game a week).

After talking to some of my bosses at PSE, I’m also very grateful that my internship will have a slow transition into the summer months instead of just abruptly ending once the offseason begins. My role throughout the summer will focus on draft coverage for the Sabres to give more insight on prospects that Buffalo could select with one of their three first-round picks.

I’ll also have more time to do mock videos for my reel on the Sabres during the summer months. Having all of the video equipment and editors at my disposal is such a big help that it will take my reel to the next level. Even though I obviously never had the ability to be on-air during a broadcast or radio show (which is very hard to come by in this industry), nothing is holding me back from doing a stand-up practice report that mimics something that would be posted on social media.

Even though it is sad knowing that my exit at PSE is potentially on the horizon, I’ve shifted those feelings into a more optimistic approach. I’m so thankful that I could learn from such exceptional professionals (and people) who welcomed me with open arms from the start and all want what is best for me in the long run.

My time at Pegula Sports & Entertainment is something I will never forget!
