As part of my internship with 43North, I was able to attend Ignite Buffalo at the Barrel Factory on February 13th. In short, Ignite Buffalo and Facebook partnered to provide free tips and tricks to small businesses on how to use Facebook and Instagram for business and marketing purposes. I was there recording the event but I was able to walk around and talk to small business owners and I exchanged several business cards!

There were three 45-minute “lecture’ style presentations – two geared towards Facebook and one towards Instagram. In between each lecture was down time to network and chat with other business owners. My supervisor and I grabbed some interviews with several people but I was able to talk to several people individually and tell them about myself, and what I hope to accomplish once I graduate.

Now, I definitely didn’t do the whole “networking event” correctly – I think it’s better to meet fewer people and chat with them for a bit longer as opposed to meeting more people and chatting for less. I started out trying to meet as many people as I could and hand out business cards, but I sat down with someone from a small film company and ended up chatting with him for the better part of ten minutes. I think this experience was the most valuable out of any of the people I talked to because I actually got to know him and his company rather than a simple quick and meet-and-greet. I’m not sure if this is the best way to go about networking events like this, but I found it to be the most valuable way to go about this event.
