After spending the 2016 spring semester interning for an in-house organization, there was one thing I was even more curious about by the time it was done: what would it be like to work at an agency? I had a great time and learned so much at my internship, but I couldn’t help but be curious about would it be like to work at an organization where every employee had the same fervor for communications like I did. For that reason, I told Dr. Irwin that I was specifically looking to spend my semester with an agency. Just my luck! After an interview held over video chat (another first for me), I was offered a Marketing and Communications internship at 19 IDEAS in Buffalo.

When I first walked through the door of their office, the thing that most surprised me was the atmosphere. I felt just like Robert De Niro’s character in The Intern. The modern styling, bright colors, and—most importantly—warm welcome from the employees made me feel right at home. Another surprise was their “dress for the day” policy. Twelve years of catholic school uniforms taught me the importance of the phrase “dress to impress,” so I felt like this was even more of a challenge. Is my “what you’re comfortable with” casual enough? I then realized my feelings where exactly the opposite of what was intended. I’m supposed to not worry about it!

I was so excited that I got to jump into a bit of writing on my first day. My supervisor told me to try and write one of their drafts for a web story. I was pretty nervous, but I think that it was best to get those jitters out on day one. Some of the other tasks that I have done include sitting in on meetings, running errands for an event, and learning how Facebook ads work. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the semester has in store!
