What I generally refer to as just the “Book Arts Center,” or WNYBAC,  is a printing and design studio that I became familiar with last year, long before I even knew I would be an intern here. Grabbing a hold of the vintage doorknob, and walking inside the first day of my internship, I was greeted by smiles from my supervisor and the other 2 employees, an easy-going, calm atmosphere, and music playing in the background. I was excited for having a reason to spend several hours there without using the excuse to buy things as a reason to visit.

Although I’ve only been at my internship for three weeks, I have honestly enjoyed every moment being here so far. Becoming situated in my role as an intern at WNYBAC has been effortless; everyone is welcoming, friendly, and more than willing to explain or help me if I am ever in need.  All of my tasks have been hands-on, which is another aspect that I enjoy. So far, a majority of my tasks have been to benefit the organization and merchandise portion, such as sorting and unwrapping greeting cards, preparing and cutting materials for book binding kits, and wrapping posters to be priced and sold. However, I have also worked below in the letterpress studio – the heart of the place. There, I have cleaned wood type blocks, helped to print Etsy coupon codes with a small press, and organized metal blocks and sorted leading. An interesting fact, I learned that although metal type seems solid, it is actually soft and can break easily. In reality, I am constantly learning, and I look forward going each day.

Below is a picture of the studio downstairs that I took on a previous visit last year:
