Two of the biggest things that I have learned at my internship this Fall at WGRZ-TV Channel 2 (Buffalo’s NBC affiliate) are responsibility and patience no matter what goes on. There have been many times when I either need to be responsible for other things besides what I  am assigned or be patient with others. Responsibility is huge when you’re an intern anywhere, but especially if you’re working for a news department or sports department as I am. There have been many times when I have been assigned sports stories or game recaps to write for the web in a short period of time, without any help at all. The web stories could range from four to five paragraphs or possibly longer depending on the subject. Another key factor about the web stories is that I may be assigned four or more at one time, with the hope that I finish them within 30 to 45 minutes because deadlines are important. My strong belief is that my supervisor trusts me to be responsible and get the stories done in a reasonable time period or I may be warned to speed up my diligence when it comes to writing. My biggest piece of advice about responsibility would be get the job done no matter the circumstances. Being responsible doesn’t always have to be aligned with working on a story or project; being responsible could be getting to your internship on time and asking a lot of questions to show your supervisor that you are interested in the field that you are working in.

Patience is a key priority as well at your internship. There are times when you might finish your project or assignment and you need your supervisor to look over it but they are busy finishing their work; this has happened to me at times as well. My best advice would be to try and find something else to do, but do not get on social media and chat or play games. Doing those things shows your supervisor that you can’t be trusted to be patient enough for him or her to get finished doing their job. Having your supervisor’s trust in you is key, and having patience and being responsible are keys to success no matter what.
