It’s pretty clear that at COLI we’re fans of screencasting!  It’s great for creating short tutorial videos demonstrating a procedure or toolset on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.  There’s a bunch of different tools we use for screencasting, depending on whether we want to crank out a quick explanatory clip for a simple job, or produce a carefully scripted, neatly edited tutorial for a complex task.

Faculty may find screencasting useful for:

  • producing weekly reminder videos, showing students what they need to do and where to find it within Desire2Learn or out on the web.
  • demonstrating technical procedures or introducing features of software or web tools essential to coursework.
  • creating mini-lectures that feature dynamic markups of maps, photographs, or other visual media.

Staff may find screencasting useful for

  • creating tutorials for new Canisius students or employees, showing how to find and use web tools and services.
  • creating tutorials for Canisius students or employees, demonstrating new or updated web tools and services.
  • video-documenting problems for troubleshooting, when working with software vendors or the Canisius College Help Desk.

In our wiki, we maintain a page with examples, links, and descriptions of our favorite screencasting tools.
