COVID-19 isn’t slowing the Canisius College Borders and Migrations Initiative! We have a robust set of events and opportunities in the Spring 2021 semester. These events are free and open to the public, and will be livestreamed with option to submit questions to the panel.

 


 

On February 24th, 2021 from 4:00pm – 5:30pm EST, the Canisius Borders and Migrations Initiative hosted a virtual discussion of the new book Voices of the Border: Testimonios of Migration, Deportation, and Asylum. (Georgetown University Press). Co-facilitated with the Kino Border Initiative, the Borders & Migrations Initiative is honored to welcome authors Ma. Engracia Robles Robles, M.E., and Tobin Hansen, PhD. to discuss their new literary work.

Ma. Engracia Robles Robles is the Education Coordinator at the Kino Border Initiative. Dr. Tobin Hansen is the Instructor of Anthropology at the University of Oregon. The authors described testimonies gathered from migrants at the U.S. – Mexico border over a period of years, that form the basis of their book.

The Borders and Migrations Initiative would like to thank the authors for their generosity and insights. Our program is enriched by their presence and shared commitment to Ignatian perspectives on refugees, migration, and public policy.

art21: Borderlands Screening & Curator Talk/Panel Discussion

On Tuesday, March 9th at 7:00 pm, The Canisius Borders and Migrations Initiative hosted a virtual panel discussion of the film documentary art21: Borderlands. This event was live-streamed.

Environment, Refugees and Risk: Dr. Pablo Bose

On Monday, March 15th at 7:00 PM EST, Dr. Pablo Bose joined the Canisius Border & Migrations virtual series, with a presentation entitled Environment, Refugees and Risk: Mapping Environmental Vulnerabilities, Epidemic Outbreaks, and Camps.

Pablo S. Bose, PhD, Director, Global and Regional Studies Program, Provost’s Faculty Fellow for General Education, University of Vermont. 

Dr. Bose is Associate Professor of Geography and Director of Global & Regional Studies at the University of Vermont.

Professor Bohdan Szklarski: Immigration and Populism: Comparing Poland, Hungary, and the U.S.

On Tuesday, April 20th, 2021 at 6:00 PM EST, the Canisius College Borders and Migration Initiative will host a presentation by Professor Bohdan Szklarski entitled “Immigration and Populism: Comparing Poland, Hungary, and the U.S.”

Dr. Bohdan Skzklarski is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Warsaw, Poland.

This is our final event of the Spring 2021 season, and is sure to be a good one!

On Tuesday, April 20th, 2021 the Canisius College Borders and Migration Initiative hosted a presentation by Professor Bohdan Szklarski entitled “Immigration and Populism: Comparing Poland, Hungary, and the U.S.”  Professor Skzklarski is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Warsaw, Poland.
