MINUTES, DECEMBER ACAC MEETING

Submitted by Sue Margulis

The meeting was called to order by Chuck Wigley at 2:12 pm.

The minutes from the November meeting were approved unanimously.

I.  Announcements & Updates from ITS

Remember that next semester is the last semester that Angel will be available.  All spring semester courses have been set up in D2L.  D2L workshops will continue during December, with the 4-session series running each week. In addition, there will be a 2-day boot camp in January (8-9) during which faculty may opt to build their spring semester courses.  Leah MacVie will offer a virtual workshop at 7pm on the evenings of Dec 16-19.  Workshops will continue during the spring semester. Be sure to register at surveys/canisius.edu/workshops, or via links in Under the Dome.  D2L has received strong positive reviews by both students and faculty who have used it this semester.  If you want to migrate Angel classes to D2L, send a message to helpdesk@canisius.edu, and include course CRN number and name, which semester, and where it should go in D2L.  Angel groups that are document repositories will be migrated.  Angel Sandboxes will likely disappear at the end of the spring semester, so remove any needed documents from these.

We are discontinuing our subscription toTurnitin.com: effective December 16.  It has not gotten a lot of use.  An alternative is being sought.

Please be sure to notify Lisa or Scott of any lab software needs for the spring.

The entire Adobe suite is now available campus-wide.  Call the helpdesk if you need it installed. An at-home license will soon be available via a third party provider at an estimated cost of $10 per year.  Note that Microsoft Office suite is similarly available for at-home use, at a cost of $15 per year.

II.  Special presentation: Dr. Michael Wood, iBooks.

Michael presented on overview of the process of publishing an e-book via iBooks.  Michael used the iBook Author app to write a high school physics textbook (with his father).  Michael indicated that iTunes was very user friendly about guiding authors through the process.  Apple does basic copy-editing and provides guidance and support.  iBooks require the iBook app for reading.  Authors who wish to sell their book via iTunes need a tax ID number, as well as an ISBN number.  Links are available via iTunes for these.  Features of iBooks include the ability to embed video or self-running powerpoints, and dynamic web pages.  One must be well-versed on copyright issues, and use of Creative Commons illustrations is encouraged.  Although iBooks can be exported as pdf files, much of the iBook functionality is lost.  In sum, prospective iBook authors need the following: iBook author, iBook app, iTunes account, ISBN number, trademark, copyright, Creative Commons access.  ACAC was very impressed with Michael’s efforts.
