Rev. Edward T. Dunn, S.J., a Jesuit priest, retired scholar and educator at Canisius College, died Sunday, March 24 at Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx, NY. He was 88.

Father Dunn originally taught theology when he came to the college in 1958. He joined the History Department faculty in 1968 and retired from teaching in 2000.

Father Dunn’s specialty was American History. He taught courses in the history of Canada, the Age of Jackson, America between the Wars (Civil and World War I), Colonial History, the American Revolution and the American Railroads. “Ned was an extremely engaging writer and lecturer,” said Larry Jones, PhD, professor of history, who served as department chair during Father Dunn’s tenure. “He blossomed as a published historian. He was also a good story teller and had a crusty sense of humor that many people didn’t realize.”

He was also actively involved in the college’s student organizations and served as moderator of Little Theatre and as faculty advisor for the Canisius College Republicans.

Father Dunn published many scholarly articles as well as several books through Canisius College Press, including Buffalo’s Delaware Avenue Mansions and Families (2003) and A History of Railroads in Western New York (2000).

A member of the Canisius Jesuit Community, Father Dunn was admired as a priest and scholar.
“Ned will be remembered in the community as an enthusiastic reader, teacher, published scholar, and preacher, said Michael F. Tunney, S.J., rector of the college’s Jesuit community. “To this day, people around town always ask about Father Dunn. They are quick to share favorite stories of Ned from the classroom and pulpit. Jesuits are meant to care for peoples’ souls. Ned made sure to shape their intellects as well.”

Born in Orange, NJ, Father Dunn entered the Society of Jesus in 1943. After he obtained a master’s degree in education from Woodstock College, Maryland; he taught Latin, English and German at Regis High School in New York City. Father Dunn returned to Woodstock to study theology before his ordination in 1956. He earned a master’s degree in history in 1964 and a PhD from the University of Rochester in 1969.

For more than 20 years, Father Dunn said Mass every other Sunday at Christ the King Parish in Snyder. He also served as “house chaplain” to the Koessler family for many years. Father Dunn had an extensive model train collection. An avid sportsman, he was a fierce competitor on the golf course and tennis court.
A wake will be held today from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Murray-Weigel Hall, 515 East Fordham Road, Bronx. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 27 at 11:30 a.m. in Murray-Weigel Hall. Interment will be at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville, NY.

The Canisius College Video Institute will premiere the documentary film, “East Side: A Community of Hope,” on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

The 30-minute film, produced by Erik Taheri (DMA ’14) and Rich Lunghino (DMA ’13), examines the East Side of Buffalo – a community plagued by violence, poverty, and suffering – and the faith-based initiatives being undertaken in an effort to revitalize this once-thriving community. The inspiration for the film came from Taheri’s own lifelong devotion to helping those less fortunate who live on the East Side of Buffalo, and a summer 2012 immersion trip to the East Side led by Michael Gent, PhD, professor of management, and Devonya Havis, PhD, assistant professor of philosophy.

The award-winning Canisius College Video Institute provides students with opportunities to put their classroom lessons to work on projects that enrich their learning and benefit the greater community. Students produce social documentaries and service-oriented videos – all connected by the theme of social justice – to promote discourse on ethical, social and cultural issues relevant to the world today. The Video Institute is co-directed by Barbara J. Irwin, PhD, professor and chair of communication studies, and Jamie O’Neil, associate professor of digital media arts and director of the Digital Media Arts Program.

For additional information about the event and to view the trailer, visit www.buffaloeastside.com, e-mail Irwin at irwin@canisius.edu or call (716) 888-2108.

The Canisius College Chorale, under the direction of Frank Scinta, will continue its 2012-2013 Sacred Spaces Concert Series with a performance on Sunday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island, NY.

The program is free and open to the public. It will feature works of Vivaldi, Hogan, Hairston, Praetorius, Dawson and others.

Sacred Spaces stems from an idea the choir proposed seven years ago to feature its music in some of Western New York’s most beautiful and acoustically resonant environments – namely, the sanctuaries of our region’s present and former churches. As a result, the choir has visited nearly thirty houses of worship with its repertoire of sacred and secular music spanning five centuries.

Now in its fifteenth season, The Canisius College Chorale remains one of Western New York’s most active collegiate music ensembles. Composed of 120 undergraduate and graduate members, the chorale regularly presents concert programs to school, church, and community audiences throughout Western New York and Southern Ontario. In recent years, the Chorale has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Ars Nova Chamber Musicians, Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Please join us for a lovely evening of great choral music for all ages.

Shelly Baronich works in the controller’s office and won Sabres tickets through this entry in the Shoot and Score contest:

“What does Canisius mean to me? In a nutshell…success! I took the job at Canisius to simply provide a college education for my two children. But what happened was Canisius became a second family to me. My children took advantage of all that Canisius has to offer by becoming involved in campus life, clubs and studying abroad. They truly appreciate what has been given to them. They are both education majors; my son Michael graduated in 2011 and my daughter Emily will graduate this May. They studied in Italy and Australia, respectively, giving me and my husband a reason to go visit them!

“However, the most exciting part of my ‘nutshell’ is that Canisius also gave me the opportunity to go back to college at the age of 45 and earn my bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies. It is a goal I never thought I would accomplish. However, with the encouragement, support and kindness of the Canisius community, including my professors, fellow students and co-workers, it gave me the courage I needed to succeed. I proudly graduated in 2012 and am grateful every day for the opportunity.”

Shelly won two tickets to a Sabres game. Your next Sabres game could be on us too. You can enter and win by submitting an example or story that best reflects the Canisius experience. It could be a short story about a student, professor, class, project or activity on or off campus. It could involve you or someone else. We want to hear about service projects, internships, clubs and people that go the extra mile and deserve recognition. Submissions can be made through www.canisius.edu/studentsurge.

Students, faculty and staff can also purchase tickets at the discounted price of $25 each. Tickets are available for most home games and available in the Office of Campus Programming and Leadership Development in the Student Center.
