Freshman Orientation
By Louiza | August 16, 2011
It’s so exciting to think that all of the new incoming Freshman will be moving in to campus in the next week! As silly as it may seem, this is my favorite time of the year. Having been a resident assistant for two years, I really got to work a lot with the freshman and help them get involved on campus. Now, my role has changed a little bit because I get to interact with the kids as a tour guide before they even decide on coming to Canisius.
Helping out with freshman move in day is such an exhilarating experience. All the new students have specific hours that they can move in and their car literally gets attacked by a group of resident assistants, tour guides, members of a club, or some of the division 1 athletes. We tell the families that we will have their entire car unpacked in 30 minutes or less. Most of the time though, the day that all the Freshman move in is one of the hottest days of the summer. Everyone is super warm, but that also makes the experience so much more fun.
When the freshman first come in, most of them are terrified. As the day goes on and the kids get their room more and more organized, they become much more comfortable. I also feel that they become more comfortable because they see what a “home” environment Canisius has and how all of us current students are so comfortable together and truly get along amongst ourselves and the professors.
I really hope that I get to be a crucial part of freshman move in like I have been in the years past. I want to be able to be my bubbly self and change a student’s perspective of the college to make it even more positive!
