Super-Awesome-Exciting News!
By Meghan '12 | March 31, 2011
Hello, everybody! I have some really, REALLY exciting news! (As you may have deduced from the title…)
So right at the beginning of this semester I was informed about a really interesting research program coming up this summer. I mentioned it in an earlier blog, but for the sake of simplicity, I’ll recap! The program was calling for applicants and they decided around April they would pick the students to come participate. And I was chosen!!
The program is called the REU Summer Program and is held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It’s sponsored by the National Science Foundation and is designed for helping students engage in hands-on activities in either its Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensic paths. I applied for Computer Forensics and was so shocked to hear I was chosen! Only 12 students are chosen for the entire program; meaning 4 for each track! You can imagine my surprise to find out I was one of the four!
The program runs this summer for a few months and is a paid, all-inclusive opportunity! It’s absolutely amazing to be in this position! My housing? FREE. My meals? FREE. My transportation to and from Alabama? FREE!!! It’s insane! Not to mention that I get paid for my research; a stipend of 450 dollars a week!
And the work I’ll be doing is super interesting! I get to work on REAL criminal cases and REAL law enforcement and everything! Also, the professor will be working very closely with us; the whole experience is very small in numbers in order to optimize learning!
Also, every Friday we will be joined by a guest speaker. During my phone interview, they were listing off the accomplishments of some of the speakers and, wow, I was in awe! I can’t believe I will get to meet some of these extraordinary and successful people from all over the world!
After returning from Italy, I really thought I wasn’t going to leave home again fora long time. It’s so crazy how life works. All I know is that I am so grateful for this opportunity and excited for the adventure coming my way! Yay!
I’ll write again soon!
