Long Weekend and Looking to Next Year

By Alex | February 27, 2011

This past four day weekend was a much needed break from school.  Minimal homework was assigned over it and I think that everyone needed it as a mental break.  As detailed in my previous blog, break was proceeded by a maelstrom of tests and quizzes, none of which were easy to take on and all of which required much time and preparation for.  Most of my floor is majoring in science and by the end of that week we were definitely at the end of our ropes, so the break came at a crucial time when we all needed some mental R&R.

Also, this weekend I learned that I am going to be an RA next year in Dugan Hall, my current residence hall.  My girlfriend also applied, making these past few weeks quite nerve wracking once our final interview were over with.  The whole process started at the end of January with a kind of group interview during which we were loosely evaluated based on how we interacted with each other and how we answered questions.  Based on this we were selected for a personal interview and were given a “passport” that we had to fill with pictures of things we enjoy or that have meaning in our life.  To give an example of this, in mine I had the name of my favorite band, pictures from when I went to Africa, someone skiing, the TV show Scrubs, a Kairos Cross, me rowing, and other such pictures.  I also wrote my name in elvish on the cover since I love Lord of the Rings.  We then went to a fifteen minute interview during which we explained two things on our passport and then were asked questions by the interviewers.  This was during the week of the 12th and we were to be notified on the 22nd.

Needless to say, my girlfriend and I were constantly checking our e-mails on the 22nd until at last we got the decision.  Both of  of us were ecstatic about the decision, though it will be quite different next year wht with us not living down the hall from each other and all.  Also, it will be weird to be the senior resident in charge of freshmen or potentially other sophmores, in which case I won’t be the senior resident but I’ll still be in charge of other students.  Finally, the current girls’ RA on my floor said I might be partnered with her which would be really nice for me since she already has a year of experience.  So all in all next year is shaping up to be both a very exciting and challenging year.
