Work Study

By Lyndsay | October 26, 2009

In the beginning of this year I was determined to get a work-study job. I called a few places, set up interviews and only had luck in the student health center. When I had my interview the secretary said I shouldn’t even be working because of my busy schedule. When I changed my major I had an easier schedule, but the job was already given away. I was super bummed and was jobless up until two weeks ago.

One of my good friends here told me that she had an interview, and they were looking for more people. At this point I didn’t care what I was doing; I just wanted to work somewhere. We ended up going to a near by church called Lincoln Memorial, but I really didn’t know what I would be doing. We met with our boss and she told us we both had the job automatically and could even ask our friends if they wanted to work too. We ended up getting one other girl to work with us!

Job description: help little kids with their homework, interacting with each other, do your own homework, and have fun. It sounded pretty sweet and simple to me. I love kids and being able to hangout with kindergarten through 5th graders for three hours seemed like a good break from class.

So far the toughest homework I’ve tackled was 2nd grade division!! I think the little one knew it better than I did to be honest. All in all I’m really glad I found a work study that is fun and I feel good about doing!
