Productive College = Love for Coffee

By Joel | September 29, 2009

For a long time now, I have been trying to avoid coffee because I tend to have a fast heart rate that doctors I have talked to say is attributed to my love affair with the most popular drug in the world, caffeine. And as hard as it is for me to back away from this relationship, I would have to admit that I have done pretty well not having coffee for weeks, especially in the first half of this semester. But on Thursday, probably by mistake or just natural craving, I had some coffee and since then have made the decision to regularly drink coffee once again. As lovers say, it’s better to have loved than not at all… Sorry doc!

Coffee... Yum yum... :-)

Coffee... Yum yum... :-)

It is really hard for a college student who has to keep the stamina and the energy up to be able to be productive and not have some coffee. Kudos to the great students out there who are able to meet the demands of being in college (by this I mean actually doing academic work and not simply socializing) without any boost from el café. And so for me and what I believe is a majority of students the following equation holds true, productive college = love for coffee. I just can’t imagine one being able to keep his attention until the wee hours of the night to read through articles, much less retain the information and write a good paper.

I find it reassuring to know that all the professors I have had admit to being addicted to caffeine. I have not met anyone not once in the college who has said no to coffee. And I could just see that because if they are in the library doing their research and typing their papers, this is going some years back, they would want to keep themselves awake by other means besides their natural interest for the subject they deal with. Such was the case for me last Thursday, when I was able to gather resources for my paper in no time and still have the energy or should I say adrenaline to keep going and do other things. It was fun! It was really fun! It was one of those weird moments that reaffirmed for me that I am a college student, struggling to go through the tons of materials for the semester and needing coffee to be productive. I guess I have to go back to the doctors and ask them for a different diagnosis because there is no way I am going to give up coffee, especially as the semester progresses.
