ArtsCanisius presents Women in the Arts Week to celebrate Women’s History Month. This celebration features several musical performances highlighting women performers and composers as well as a music history lecture. The festivities begin on Monday (February 27) at noon with a Meet-the-Faculty Recital featuring Anna Mattix, oboe & English horn; Betsy Reeds, flute and Susan Schuman, piano in the Montante Cultural Center. Admission is free.
Other scheduled events include:
- Thursday, March 1, 7:30 p.m., Montante Cultural Center – Buffalo’s Ladies First Big Band created by bassist Jennifer May. Get out the dancing shoes and get ready for a real treat as the Ladies First Big Band makes its first visit to Canisius. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students, and can be purchased here (https://griffpay.canisius.edu/C20497_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=29) or at the door.
- Friday, March 2, 7:30 p.m., Christ the King Chapel — organist Barbara Harbach and Canisius College voice majors Jena Abati, Rachael Bosak and Emily Yancey highlight “Women Organ Composers from the Renaissance to the Present” and vocal works by Barbara Harbach and 19th Century composer Louise Reichardt. Admission is free.
- Saturday, March 3, 7:30 p.m., Montante Cultural Center — The Alabaster Box Gospel Choir, Karen E. Williams, director presents a program entitled “ALABASTER BOX: The Gospel According to HER!” Admission is free.
- Monday, March 5, noon, Regis Room South — the festival closes with a music lecture given by Barbara Harbach, PhD, professor of music, University of Missouri at St. Louis which highlights “21st Century Women Composers.” Admission is free.
