Moving on, is a simple thing, what it leaves behind is hard.” -Dave Mustaine

I stated in my previous blog that Buffalo, NY got snow… well we are still getting that snow. It is a winter wonderland out there!  It is beautiful to see the snow falling from the sky, but it is not so beautiful to drive in all of this snow. I am hoping that soon, Buffalo will get use to the snow and begin to drive “normally” again with caution. Right now it is taking quite some time to get anywhere because the traffic is so backed up, but hopefully we will all get into the groove of winter driving.

Last week I completed my Career Counseling final! I will have to admit, it was extremely tough. I am VERY grateful that it was a take home exam. I am thinking that, that is why the exam was so tough (because it was take-home, so we had resources and the time to look things up). Needless to say I was anticipating my score. Dr. Rutter set up the exam so it was half objective and half subjective. When I submitted the objective portion I assumed I would get automatic feedback, but that was not the case. Fortunately, soon after the exam was closed he posted results… I received a 92! I am very happy about my score! This leaves me with a 93.8% overall in the course, which I believe is equivalent to an A-.

This week has been very productive and stressful all wrapped into one for me. I started off the week with the wonderful surprise of my car not wanting to start. I have had this trouble before, a few months ago (it was starting when it wanted to) so I purchased a new car starter. Well, now it is back to not starting again. I came to the conclusion that I need to move on and buy a newer car. I purchased this car my senior year in high school, so I want to say 7 and a half years ago and I have accumulated 140,000 miles. I think I got my money’s worth with the vehicle and had to accept that and move forward. So after doing some very quick shopping around, I found a good deal on a 2009 Chevy Cobalt and purchased it. With beginning my full-time internship January 3rd along with classes and working at Red Robin, I need a car that I can depend on, not just keeping for the emotional attachment.

Academically, I completed my last final of the semester on Tuesday in Family and Couples Counseling. I felt fully prepared for that exam which is always a plus. Dr. Lenhardt went through an excessive review last week, a couple classmates and I met on Sunday to study together, and I studied on my own time. The in-class portion of the exam was 50 multi-choice questions, choosing from a, b, c, or d. I think I mentioned before that it was a cumulative exam.  So I am now waiting on the results from that. After I receive that mark, I will have all of my grades for the semester.

On Wednesday, I met with my new cooperating counselor at Oracle Charter School. I was a little nervous about my internship here, just because another classmate of mine worked there for her Practicum experience and wasn’t thrilled about it. After going there and meeting with my cooperating counselor and some of the students, I became very excited about it! I will pretty much be working on my own as a School Counselor, but have my cooperating Counselor there to guide and support me. She said that I will be teaching different counseling courses after school (like study skills, and organization), running peer mediation groups, scheduling, individual sessions, just the whole nine. I believe after talking with her, that after this experience, I will be completely confident to begin my career as a School Counselor. The Charter school is located in a beautiful old mansion! I wish I took a few pictures so you all could see it! The architecture is just amazing.

In the evening on Wednesday I went to my very first Buffalo Sabers game! For those of you who are not familiar to who the Sabers are, they are a professional hockey team located in Buffalo, NY. I have resided in Buffalo for 5 years now and this was my first game! I have started something I like to call my “Buffalo’s Bucket List”. This list consists of all the things I want to do before I move away from Buffalo. I’m not sure when I am moving, all that I know is that I graduate May 18th and hope to find a job soon after in a new location. I love Buffalo, but I would like to conquer a new place.

My first Sabres game! Not the BEST seats, but we could see all that was going on! :-)

That ties up the semester!!! A lot is changing in my life as I turn 25 (Jan.25th)!! I knew that 25 was going to be an important year for me because this is the year I will obtain my Master’s degree, but I feel a lot more than that is changing. I got a new car, I am leaving my position as a Graduate Assistant to fulfill my requirements for my full-time internship (which I will miss dearly, as I have formed bonds with all of my co-workers over the last 16 months), I will be beginning my full-time internship, and eventually I will be out of school and into the professional world. In my first encounter at Canisius College, my professor who is also the Counseling Department Chair said, “Be what you are becoming”. Those words stuck with me and I truly feel that I have evolved here at Canisius, being what I am becoming.
