After a nice break from classes, because of the ACPA Conference, it is now back to reality. In History this week we went over higher education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This included a discussion on the rise of football and other sports. We ended the class by discussing faculty and tenure.

This morning I took my son to the Buffalo Museum of Science for the first time. Being a huge fan of Sesame Street, I thought my son might get a kick out of the newest exhibit: Sesame Street – The Body. I was a little curious myself as to what the exhibit was all about and welcomed the chance to tire Noah out!

Even though it’s March Madness for basketball fans, myself included, this is also a crazy time for me. Since I got back from Phoenix last week, I took part in helping with the Golden Gloves (amateur boxing tournament) that took place Saturday in downtown Buffalo. Meanwhile that Friday and Saturday, the NCAA Basketball Tournament was taking place in Buffalo as well. The Golden Gloves was a class project that we were working on promoting, selling program ads, and helping run the tournament in general. It was pretty successful and a good learning experience.

This week I spent another day in the grade 3/4 split class where I’m doing my pre-student teaching placement at an elementary school in Newmarket (Ontario), and just like the school day before Spring Break, there were special activities going on in the school that resulted in quite a deviation from the standard Friday agenda.

Well we all know that we want to be teachers, but do we all remember why that is. I know some say because I love to teach kids new things, while others are honest and say I want my summers off. Well I am not one to argue with either of those reasons. For me I have always loved teaching from the days that I taught the neighborhood kids to make cookies when I was babysitting them, to the days that I worked at William Lawrence Summer Camp, to now when I sub for physical education classes. But hey let’s be honest, summers off isn’t a bad way to go either. However, through this all, this week I got a subtle reminder as to why I have chosen this profession.

The bus ride to Boston, to attend the ACPA conference, set the tone for the trip… lively and exciting! We watched classic movies, such as Without A Paddle and Edward Scissorhands, which allowed us to take breaks from the movie and pick right back up without having to refresh our memories. We made it to Boston in record time, for which I am grateful to our speed demon of a bus driver.

Hey folks, here I am again! I’m really on a ” I NEED TO GET THINGS DONE!” kick. I’m so excited to have some time to be able to start getting major things checked off my list. I want to be able to have the energy and spunk to get all the stuff in my life out of the way so I don’t have to worry about it. I’ve been getting my assignments done quickly and efficiently, I’ve been trying to apply for jobs, looking up what it takes to get certified in health, FAFSA, checking on my loans……. etc, etc, etc……….

Last night we got back from Boston and the ACPA conference, and I definitely did not want to leave. I had an awesome time in Boston and the conference itself was awesome!

You read that correctly! New York State is currently debating slapping us with big, fat “we don’t care about you, sorry.” If Governor Paterson’s $1.3 billion cut in education aid is enacted, then almost 15,000 teaching jobs in New York will be cut. The effect is already being seen right around Western New York, as Lockport is considering closing two elementary schools and East Aurora and Williamsville, among others, are raising school taxes and cutting school programs because of the loss of finances.

I feel as though we’ve reached that point in the semester when a couple of things happen. One, you suddenly go from having a minimal (or very manageable) amount of school work to do to an overwhelming amount! I don’t know about you, but all of a sudden it seems as though I have a ton of stuff to accomplish before the end of the semester!!
