I had the pleasure of spending the past summer at Delaware North in their human resources department. Having had three months worth of experience under my belt, I found going into a fall internship was slightly easier for me.

The world of human resources is one that many people may find boring and repetitive. I heard the typical cliché remarks regarding my involvement in the department – most saying that human resources is there to make sure no one has fun.

That being said, I’ve been pleased to see that my internship is far from boring. The department itself is incredibly face-paced. There are always so many different things going on at once. The projects I get to work on are exciting, but also very new to me.

That being said, my boss is extremely patient with me. He talks me through anything I don’t understand and he is always willing let me work independently when it comes to a project. When I started working with workers comp. files for the first time I asked if he should watch. He took a good look at me and said that failing is a part of life. If I didn’t do it right, then I could just redo it. His approach was something that really allowed me to learn more about workers comp. files.

The next few weeks is going to be spent working on new hire paperwork and going to job fairs around the area. It may not sound like a lot of fun, but the high energy atmosphere that’s in the office can make anyone excited to fill out a government form.

I didn’t expect Human Resources to be exciting, but there is so much pride and excitement in the office. Everyone seems to be sporting the Delaware North logo in as many articles of clothing as possible – from polos and zip-ups, to hats, the name is everywhere (my boss promised to get me a Delaware North fleece before I left).

Maybe HR does have more fun.
