I began my internship two and a half weeks ago at an advertising agency in downtown Buffalo called 15 Fingers. I had an idea of what I was walking into as I had visited the creative team last spring when I interviewed for the position. From the start, I loved how small and tight-knit the company was. Although the team will be expanding, there are currently only 9 employees including the two owners, Zack and Greg. Of course I was a tiny bit nervous on my first day, even though I knew I would be walking into a super friendly and considerably casual atmosphere. The office is right next to the theatre district on Main Street and every day I go to my internship I enjoy the scenic walk from my car to the building. On the first day, everyone remembered who I was and was just as excited for me to intern as I was. I was asked what my strengths were/what I enjoyed doing and with my reply of “writing” I started right away as a copywriter intern. In these past two and a half weeks, I have gotten a broad range of experiences that are not just limited to writing. I have learned how to use Excel (something I had never really had much experience with), among other programs that the company uses. I have also had practice in making client calls for quick little checkups. As far as writing goes, I have been asked to create tag lines for emails, body copy, and slogans in my time so far. Even though not every task I am given pertains to writing, I am still gaining so much experience about what it takes to run an agency. I am so excited to see where this takes me, whether it be determining that copywriting is my desired career path or deciding I actually don’t even want to work for an advertising agency. Until next time!
