Every year the Advertising Club of Buffalo puts on the Addys and it’s kind of a big deal. This year Friday, March 9th was the night.

You’re probably wondering what the heck the Addys are. Well, the best way I can think of describing them is the Golden Globes of advertising. People from the Buffalo area submit work, it gets judged, and they decided on who earns silver and gold in each category. There’s an event, everyone gets dressed up, there’s food and drinks, and the awards are given out.

Each year there is some overall theme to the Addys. Last year it was The Science of Persuasion, this year it was Give the People What They Want. Everything is created around this theme, from the awards presentation to the look book.

Since this year’s theme was Give the People What They Want, the awards were presented between clips of ordinary people giving their take on ads. Many of their comments were hilarious and true. One of the clips was of a retired woman saying, “I read the obituaries, my horoscope, then I look at the ads.” Another was of a sporting goods sales rep saying, “A puppy and attractive people. Those are probably the top two selling points for me.” These comments from people outside of the advertising industry were not only funny, but got you thinking. What makes people stop and look at ads? How can we draw people in? What’s funny?

I had the opportunity to attend the Addys the past two years with the Canisius College Ad Club. Both years were very memorable and a lot of fun. I was able to see many different styles of advertising, what wins awards, and had the chance to interact with people in the advertising industry from around Buffalo. It’s a great event to see what agencies are doing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves advertising, food, fun, and great people.
